Academic skills, professional connections, mentoring, community, and visibility. Each programme is built around a specific part of the distance between law school and the profession.
Legal writing, research method, and examination technique are learnable skills. ALSA's academic programme runs workshops that equip students with practical tools to perform at the level they are capable of. We will always work to bring practitioners into these sessions, and where we cannot, we work toward it.
Getting the right connections is not about luck or personality. It is about being in the right rooms and knowing what to do when you are there. ALSA's development programme gives members the skills to network with purpose, the access to practitioners across different areas of law, and the confidence to turn a conversation into a genuine professional relationship.
Access to a practitioner who understands where you are coming from is one of the most direct things ALSA offers a law student. ALSA's mentoring programme matches students with lawyers based on shared interests, background, and career direction. It runs for the full length of Semester 2, giving each pair enough time to build a relationship that actually means something.
The strongest professional networks are rarely built inside a single institution or cohort. ALSA's engagement programme creates the space for members to connect across year groups, disciplines, and industries. The more people you know, the more doors exist. These events are where that starts.
Through social media, a published newsletter, and an upcoming podcast, the Marketing and Communications portfolio puts the work and voices of ALSA's members in front of the profession and future members.
Membership is open to law students at the University of Auckland and AUT. Join General for free or upgrade to Premium for priority access.
If you are a practising lawyer, professional, academic, or organisation and want to get involved with ALSA, we would love to hear from you.
