Intern

Marketing Intern: Social Media

This intern role sits inside the marketing team and supports the Social Media Officer. You assist with content creation, scheduling, and caption writing. It is a learning role: by end of semester you should be ready to take on the Social Media Officer role independently.

  • Assist the Social Media Officer with scheduling posts across Instagram and LinkedIn. You are learning the rhythm of how the accounts run. Consistent scheduling is a skill. Inconsistency is noticeable.
  • Draft captions and social copy for review before publishing. You are writing for the organisation, not a personal account. Getting copy back for revision is part of the process. The goal is to need fewer rounds over time.
  • Help capture content at ALSA events and assist with editing short-form video for Reels and LinkedIn. Good content does not happen by itself. Come to events knowing what you are there to capture, and be ready to turn raw footage into a publishable clip.
  • Learn and apply ALSA's brand voice consistently in all output. Every post you touch should sound like ALSA. If you are unsure, ask before publishing.
  • Take on independent posting responsibilities as your confidence grows. By end of semester you should not need sign-off on every post. Build toward that from week one.
  • Contribute ideas to the fortnightly content calendar planning session. You are not just executing someone else's plan. Your ideas should be in the calendar.
  • Update the comprehensive handover document at the end of each semester. Note what you built, what content formats performed, and what you would recommend for the next intake. The next intern should start ahead of where you started.
  • Time commitment: Roughly 5–10 hours per week; expect more in event weeks
  • Meetings: Attend the weekly marketing team meeting and the monthly all-team session. Once a month, the portfolio meeting is replaced by a full-team session where every portfolio and cabinet come together.
  • Posts: A minimum of two independently managed posts per week by the fourth week
  • Calendar: Active contribution to content calendar planning each fortnight
  • Coverage: Present at ALSA events to capture content when required

By end of semester, you are drafting and posting content independently, your output matches the quality and tone of the Social Media Officer, and you are prepared to step into that role the following semester.

First Two Weeks

Before anything else, read the executive standards. They cover what we expect from everyone on the team. In the first two weeks, you will audit ALSA's existing social content, learn the brand voice, produce one post under direction, and begin contributing to the content calendar.

Throughout the two weeks, send brief, regular updates to your officer: what you worked on, what is next, and anything you are stuck on. Interns are assessed more closely during this period. Consistent, proactive communication is how you earn the team's confidence.

Good fit

  • You have a genuine interest in social media and want to develop it in a real organisational context
  • You have some experience with video editing and are comfortable producing short-form clips
  • You are comfortable receiving feedback and do not need to be fully autonomous immediately
  • You are aiming to step up to Social Media Officer in a future semester

Not the right role

  • You are looking for a role with immediate creative or strategic leadership
  • Social media does not genuinely interest you beyond a personal level
